This month, your support helped bring our mission to life in so many ways. Families came together to celebrate with a Mother’s Day breakfast and Father Figure Game Night, while behind the scenes, our team strengthened programs through training and reflection. Because of you, every step we take builds stronger families and brighter futures. We’re grateful to have you with us on this journey and look forward to what we create together in the future.

Emergency Funds

Support Our Families

Families are falling through the cracks as cuts to housing, childcare, and healthcare take a toll. At Children’s Place Association, we’re doing all we can for kids with serious health needs, teens aging out of foster care, and families facing eviction. The need keeps growing. Help us raise $50,000 in emergency support to keep vital programs running and provide kids with the care they deserve. [Click here to give.]

May Junior Board

Junior Board Fun

Along with the hard work our Junior Board puts in throughout the year, we also make time for fun. A recent gathering at Island Party Hut on the Chicago Riverwalk provided us with a great opportunity to connect and unwind together. We’re grateful for their energy, ideas, and continued support of our mission.

Program Updates

Month in Review
At the beginning of May, we wrapped up our after-school programming for the semester. Our students closed out the season by presenting their Civic Leadership Foundation project. They explored essential topics, including mental health, emotional support, access to clean water, and the value of art and art education. We ended the day with a pizza party to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our Thrivers.

  • A special thank you to Lia Kornmehl for volunteering with Thrive—your support made a big impact, and we’ll truly miss you!

Early Learning

Month in Review
In May, our Early Learning Center team completed our Annual Self-Assessment, taking time to reflect on and strengthen our practices for the future. In honor of Mental Health Month, we offered staff training opportunities and hosted a Spring Resource Fling for families. We also celebrated the caregivers in our community with a Mother’s Day breakfast, bringing everyone together for a joyful Father Figure Game Night.

Home Base ( )

Month-in-Review
In May, we took time to celebrate the maternal figures in our Home-Based families with care and appreciation. During our mental health event, families connected with helpful resources and learned simple ways to manage stress and support emotional well-being. One of the highlights was watching families enjoy time together exploring the ELC playground and soaking up the fresh air.

A Celebration Story: Penina
This month, we are honored to share the incredible story of Penina, a brave young girl from Tanzania who beat a cancer diagnosis thanks to the dedicated staff of our local Child Thrive partner and the support of the CPI community.

“Penina (18) has written a unique page of victory in her life against Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

After 8 months of treatment at KCMC, today we witness the successful conclusion of her treatment journey! With a courageous heart and a smile, Penina has been able to overcome every stage of treatment.

The team of doctors, nurses, and service providers from the Cancer Unit joined her in celebrating this important milestone, which brings her home in good health and with new hope.

This celebration was not only to congratulate Penina, but also a message of hope for the other [cancer] patients.” – Faith, KCMC Child Life Specialist (translated from Swahili)

Watch a short video of her celebration. Penina’s journey reminds us of the power of resilience, community, and hope. Get inspired by her strength and join us in celebrating each step forward!
