Family and Community Services
"They are a big arm of support. Sometimes you need support from people who know about this disease."
- Parent
The philosophy of The Children's Place Association is that child development occurs optimally in the presence of loving and nurturing adults therefore we work with the complete family unit. There are multiple levels of support services available for families affected by HIV/AIDS including:
Case Management
Case management works with families who are struggling with poverty and HIV/AIDS-related illness so they can find the supportive services they need. Our case managers help families identify and achieve their goals through a range of programs offered by The Children's Place and other organizations. Some of the issues addressed include housing; emergency food, rental and utility assistance; and access to medical care and educational resources for their children. We also help families prepare for the time when an ill parent may no longer be able to care for their children, offering assistance in establishing standby guardianship and adoption.
Mental Health Counseling
Counseling helps children and their parents come to terms with their own or a loved ones HIV status and the feelings of isolation, grief and loss. Counseling is offered in one-on-one settings as well as group therapy.
Lucy R. Sprague Summer Camp
The Children’s Place Association provides the only summer day camp program for children affected by HIV/AIDS in the Chicagoland area.
Supportive Housing
The Children’s Place Association has nine furnished apartments available for formerly homeless families living with HIV/AIDS.
