Residential Center
Since 1991, the Residential Center has served the most medically fragile children in the greater Chicago area, becoming a "home away from home" for this highly vulnerable population. Children's conditions range from cerebral palsy, developmental delays and complications of prematurity or HIV, to shaken baby syndrome, physical or mental abuse, or substance exposure. Hundreds of children have been helped by the Residential Center during its two decades of operations.
The 10-bed facility offers 24-hour care by specially trained registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, childcare workers and dedicated volunteers. It is more than just a place to stay, it is somewhere children can laugh, learn, dance, nap, eat and play. We provide transitional care in a structured environment that includes school activities, community outings and art projects. We also offer Family Services to support and engage the families of children at center.
Children stay at the Residential Center until they can return to their birth parents or a suitable foster or adoptive home is found.
“I came here because I was HIV-positive, and I felt comfortable here. This was the perfect place for me. I remember running through the hallways, playing.... I love [the Residential Center] to this day."
