Since opening our doors in 1991, The Children's Place Association has provided crucial care to children and families impacted by HIV/AIDS in Chicago…and more recently the developing world.
Chicago Program Highlights: Fiscal Year 2011 (7/1/2010- 6/30/2011)
- 410 individuals received services from The Children's Place Association representing 34 neighborhoods across Chicago and additional suburbs.
- 94% of individuals that receive services are minorities.
- 482 hours of individual or group therapy were given to children and their care givers.
- 20 abused or neglected children were placed with loving, trained foster or adoptive parents.
- 39 children received 24-hour nursing care at the Residential Center.
- 102 children received early childhood education at the Early Learning Center .
- 86 HIV+ individuals and their family members received assistance with emergency food, rental and utility assistance when needed as well as affordable housing and education support through our case management program.
- 84 families received help with wills and guardianships, so their children's futures will be secure.
- 9 families found security through our supportive housing program.
HIV/AIDS in Chicago
- In Illinois, more than 35,000 cases of HIV/AIDS have been reported, giving the state the sixth highest AIDS case rate in the U.S. There are currently 21,367 people living with HIV or AIDS in Chicago.
- On average, more than 2,000 HIV/AIDS cases are diagnosed every year in Chicago. Approximately 450 people die each year.
International Program Highlights: Fiscal Year 2011
- Children's Place International outreach workers made 2,912 home visits to support children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Haiti.
- 112 Haitian families received life-saving food assistance.
- 273 children in Haiti received support for school fees, uniforms and books.
- 106 families, including 442 children, received services from Children's Place International in four different Haitian communities.
- 29 families receive support for housing whether through apartment or home rentals, temporary shelters or permanent residences.
- 13 HIV+ mothers are provided with baby formula and clean water so that they don't risk transmission of HIV through breast feeding.
HIV/AIDS Around the World
- The HIV/AIDS epidemic has already claimed more than 25 million lives worldwide. It is found in every region of the world with an estimated 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, 2 million of them children under the age of 15.
- 2.7 million people worldwide were newly infected with HIV in 2007; 370,000 under the age of 15.
- Since the first cases of AIDS were reported in 1981, at least 1.7 million people in the U.S. have been infected with HIV, including more than 565,000 who have already died.
- Annual HIV incidence in the U.S. is down from it peak of 130,000 in the 1980’s. New estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that more than 56,000 people were newly infected with HIV in 2006, higher than previous estimates.
- While advances in public health initiatives have dramatically reduced perinatal HIV transmission, women account for a growing proportion of new AIDS diagnoses, rising from 8% in 1985 to 27% in 2006.
- Women of color are particularly affected, making up 65% of new AIDS cases among women in 2006. Latinas represent 16% and white women 17%.
- One in five (21%) of those living with HIV are unaware of their infection.
